Keromong and saron set out slow, clearly spaced gong cycles, their bronze ring softened by the dry wooden shimmer of gambang kayu. Serunai phrases cut through that ordered resonance with a brighter, more searching contour, while gambus or sape adds a supple plucked counterline. Courtly poise alternates with lightly interlocking frame drums and the deeper suspended tones of Sabah and Sarawak gong ensembles. Even at its quietest, the music retains a precise inner clock, giving each return and final gong stroke a satisfying sense of arrival.
