Wood, Breath, Mat and Skin Keep Different Time

Before asking which Samoan instrument is most traditional, place four attacks beside one another. A conch begins with turbulent breath and opens into a broad tone. A logo sends a heavy wooden crack across distance. A pātē produces a dry, nimble knock. A slap to the thigh combines impact with the resonance of the body. Each sound occupies time differently, and Samoan ensembles are built from those differences.
The pū sends breath into public space
The pū, also called foa or foafoa in current educational work, is made from a conch shell. It can be blown from the end or side. Its historical uses include calling a family for evening prayer and signalling activities such as fishing. A conch call is easy to romanticize because it travels over sea and village. Its technique is more concrete. The player must set the lips, control pressure and find the shell's responsive pitch. Too little air gives only noise; too much can make the attack harsh and unstable.
Malufinao Falemai's recorded pū from Lalomalava, Savai'i, lasts only as long as the signal requires. Listen to the beginning of each tone. The breath becomes pitch gradually, and the slight roughness tells you that air is passing through a physical opening, not triggering a sample. Duration communicates intention. A short call can mark; a longer one can gather attention from farther away.
The National University of Samoa uses foafoa within a community orchestra, where it meets strings and other instruments. That change of setting alters its function. The conch is no longer only calling people toward the event; it can become part of the composed event. Good writing for it preserves what makes the sound distinct: breath, limited pitch, projection and ceremonial weight.
Logo, lali and pātē are three scales of wood
The logo is the largest Samoan slit instrument. A suitable solid log must be found, hollowed and shaped so that the lips around the slit respond. Its low force carries. Historically it could announce major gatherings, religious meetings or danger. The sound is not a rounded drum boom because there is no stretched skin. It begins as struck wood and expands through the carved cavity.
Lali sit at another scale and are commonly played in pairs. The larger tatasi and smaller talua create different pitches and weights. Two players can interlock strokes, producing a conversation that is both signal and pattern. A 1982 recording by two members of the Methodist Church in Tanugamanono makes the difference audible. The larger voice establishes breadth; the smaller can answer more sharply. Silence between them prevents the pattern from becoming a blur.
The pātē is smaller and faster. Reverend Tufi Fa'apusa's recorded pātē beating in Iva, Savai'i, demonstrates how much articulation can be made from a narrow range of wood tones. Striking near a different part of the slit changes brightness. Alternating hands changes accent. Repetition sets up expectation, so one delayed stroke can feel dramatic.
Pātē also accompanies outdoor song and dance, where projection matters. Several sizes can divide labour between a steady frame and quicker figures. In contemporary heavy music, a pātē attack can cut through distorted guitar because its transient is short and bright. Shepherds Reign use that contrast: the wooden hit does not imitate a metal drum kit; it adds a separate edge.
Rebuilding the logo means rebuilding knowledge
By the twenty-first century, some older instrumental practices had become difficult to find. A collaboration between the National University of Samoa and the University of St Andrews approached the problem through people and material. Researchers visited villages, listened to knowledge holders and searched for appropriate wood. A ma'ali tree from Letui on Savai'i supplied the timber for newly carved logo and lali. The instruments were launched at the university in 2024 for teaching and for signalling important events.
The achievement is not simply that two large instruments now exist. Carving determines the response of the wood. Ceremony determines how they enter public life. Teachers must develop technique, repertory and student confidence. Dr Matāvai Tautunu connects the work to Samoan language, history and village knowledge. Susau Fanifau Konousi-Solomona and Rosaiviti Konousi Solomona make the sound usable in choirs, orchestras and classrooms. An instrument returns by acquiring work.
The fagufagu, a nose flute, belongs to a related recovery story. Breath enters differently from a mouth-blown flute, and the resulting tone can be thin, intimate and unstable in a beautiful way. Tau'ili'ili Alpha Maiava's fagufagu on Matt Sephton's Horizon, recorded through a Tiapapata Art Centre collaboration and released in 2026, places that fragile tone inside spacious electronic bass. The flute is not a short heritage signal pasted onto a beat. It changes the track's sense of distance: a human breath line hovers over low digital pressure.
The fala proves that an instrument can begin as furniture
A fala becomes percussion when a pandanus mat is rolled and struck with sticks. Pieces of bamboo or bottles placed inside can make it louder. Its tone is dry and compressed, closer to a knock than a ringing drum. That apparent limitation is useful beneath voices. The mat marks pulse without filling the frequency range where words need to remain clear.
Ordinary sitting mats can also be flicked with the fingers. The distinction between stage, floor and instrument becomes flexible. In Pese O Le Fa'aulufalega, a boy's mat beat supports the singers of Malua. In Vi'i O Solosolo, a matai beats while the other titled men sing. In each case, the same material participates in a different social arrangement.
Empty biscuit tins add a brighter metallic strike. Buckets can be beaten by hand. A selo creates bass from a container, string and stick. These solutions reveal the desired functions of an ensemble: a hard attack for fast group movement, a low pulse beneath guitars, enough volume for an outdoor event. Calling them improvised should not make them seem temporary or musically careless.
The body closes the distance
Fa'ataupati removes the last separation between musician and instrument. A performer claps and strikes thighs, chest or shoulders, combining sound with visible movement. Different body areas return different resonances. A thigh slap has more low body than a palm clap; the chest adds a hollow centre; a foot landing extends the pattern into the ground.
Precision matters more than pain. When a line of dancers places each stroke together, small variations of tone merge into a larger composite attack. A leader may begin a phrase and the group answers. Accents can accelerate, break, then return. The visual force comes from hearing the movement at exactly the moment it is seen.
Sāsā uses a broader kit. Hands and arms create visible pattern while pātē, rolled mat, tin or drum kit drive the tempo. Aggie's Hotel Group's 1982 Sāsā uses an empty biscuit tin, small slit instrument and Western drums. The combination is important. Commercial presentation did not require abandoning Samoan rhythmic organization; it used whatever attacks projected through an open performance space.
Guitar changes the envelope
Guitar and ukulele add sustain and harmony to a sound world rich in short attacks. A strummed chord can hold space between pātē strokes. Fingerpicked figures can answer a singer. Electric guitar lengthens the tone further and allows a band to shape volume, echo and melodic fills. Bass guitar supplies a rounded low line that the dry fala and pātē do not provide.
This contrast helps explain the durability of Samoan family-band sound. Close voices sit over steady guitar harmony while percussion keeps the words moving. The ensemble can be gentle without becoming rhythmically loose. When reggae enters, the offbeat guitar rearranges the same relationship. When R&B production enters, programmed drums and bass create pockets around a vocal line. When metal enters, amplified guitars make the pātē's wooden edge even more distinct.
No inventory can tell you which instrument matters most. Listen for the task: call, coordinate, support words, extend harmony, carry bass or make movement audible. Samoan music becomes physically clear when each material is allowed its own kind of time.
