What to listen for
Among isiXhosa-speaking musicians, the uhadi is a large unbraced gourd bow commonly struck with a beater. The player's hand can touch the string to create another fundamental, while the gourd against the chest filters overtones. The mouth bow called umrhubhe uses the player's mouth as a resonating chamber. Changing the mouth shape works like changing a filter: the string remains the generator, and the vocal tract reveals pitches already present in its spectrum. The player may sing against those tones. Voice and bow can imply separate lines, so one performer creates a small polyphonic field.
Latozi “Madosini” Mpahleni made this intelligence publicly audible through uhadi, umrhubhe, isitolotolo and voice. Mantombi Matotiyana brings a different vocal weight and phrasing to related instruments. Their artistry is not a museum demonstration. Each controls attack, breath, text, overtone and pace; each also worked with contemporary collaborators without surrendering authorship. Thandiswa Mazwai's encounters with Madosini make transmission visible as a relationship between named musicians. Dizu Plaatjies and Amampondo place bows, drums and ensemble choreography in another performance scale.
IsiXhosa singing often uses overlap. A leader's call may still be sounding when a response enters, so the music does not alternate in tidy blocks. Parts can cycle at different entry points, producing dense interlock from concise material. The click consonants of isiXhosa are language sounds, not percussion effects added to decorate melody. A singer decides how consonant, vowel and pitch share the breath. In choral settings, that decision becomes collective: words must remain intelligible while harmony turns each vowel into a blended sonority.
Zulu bows offer related but specific systems. The umakhweyana is braced, creating two string sections, while the ugubhu is unbraced. Princess Constance Magogo kaDinuzulu was a major composer, singer and bow player whose repertory preserved women's knowledge, royal history, love song and personal reflection. Her recordings deserve close attention to the song itself: the controlled tap of the bow, the changing resonator, the quiet authority of a line. Bavikile Ngema continued making, playing and teaching umakhweyana. Zawadi Yamungu brings the instrument into current composition. Calling these bows extinct would erase their living teachers.
The bow principle also helps with other South African sounds. A guitar string has the same overtone series, though frets and a fixed body organize it differently. Philip Tabane could make an electric guitar line circle like a spoken phrase, shifting pressure and accent while drums established Malombo's grounding pulse. Maskandi players use open-string resonance, fast alternation and tuned patterns to make one guitar sound rhythmically layered. Amapiano's synthesized log drum is electronically generated, yet it also merges pitch and impact. Across very different practices, South African musicians repeatedly turn a limited sound source into several simultaneous functions.
Drums require equal specificity. Sepedi kiba and dinaka performance can use ensembles of meropa, with differently sized drums carrying distinct patterns beneath dancers and reed pipes. Tshivenda tshikona combines a set of single-note pipes so that melody exists across many players, while drums provide a layered foundation. Tsonga xibelani performance joins rhythm, singing and the movement of the skirt; the sound belongs to a social dance, not to the garment alone. Ndebele guitarist and singer Nothembi Mkhwebane shows how an electric or amplified guitar can carry local language, dance pulse and a commanding woman's voice.
Start listening at the level of action. Ask what excites the sound, what resonates it, who begins the phrase and who changes it. On a bow recording, follow the high overtone instead of only the struck string. In a drum ensemble, choose one pattern and hold it while the others cross. In call and response, notice whether the response waits or overlaps. These habits reveal design without requiring every practice to fit one theory.
